Mark Holthusen Photoshoot

A while back I had the pleasure of working with pro photog Mark Holthusen on a project he was doing for Hasselblad. After winning the Hasselblad Masters competition for 2009, Mark was given the chance to promote one of their new cameras. Numerous photographers were given gear, a budget (very, very small) and a theme (passion) to create a personal project showcasing the newest digital back from the renowned camera maker. Mark chose to shoot his project in his home town of Reno and arranged for various locations around the city. I found out about the project by responding to a Craigslist ad looking for model talent. (Check Craigslist frequently. There is lots of fun stuff to be found in there!) So after a few emails with his producer, Sara and I drove down to Sun Valley outside of Reno to a rented empty house at the end of a dirt road. Sara thought I was crazy to be heading somewhere remote with someone strange who I did not know as this is how people end up being ax murdered. But, I had faith and it proved correct. Mark was definitely a pro, and his team was well put together. His producer, Jason Santos, has helped him with many of his professional product gigs. He hired a make up artist who has worked in film and television and with a couple of college student assistants, we were off and running. My part? I played a father who comes home after work to be shot in the head by the teenage daughter he abused. (Mark’s take on the “passion” theme was “crimes of passion”) There was a guy who committed suicide by running his car in the garage. A guy who gets his throat slit by his wife in the kitchen, and a woman who blows out her brains at the dining room table. I just had to scream and look angry as I was being capped by a .45 colt. So after a half hour in the make-up chair, and 20 minutes of shooting I was done. But what a great experience. Mark Holthusen is a great artist with a fantastic eye and the skills to pay the bills. Artemis Mediterranean Grill-Near the Tahoe Keys

The other evening I had the distinct please of dining at one of the newest restaurant in South Lake Tahoe, Artemis Mediterranean Grill. Located in the Kings Trading Post center at the entrance to the Tahoe Keys, Artemis is quickly becoming a lunch time favorite for locals and is gathering quite a following for it’s dinners. With a broad menu ranging from appetizers and salads to burgers and gyros, pastas to kebabs and shrimp dishes to rosemary braised lamb, the establishment has plenty for everyone. As a bonus, their selection of vegetarian options gave my vegan girlfriend Sara the chance at a fantastic meal without all the hassle of having to explain what a vegetarian meal should be!

We started our dinner off with a sampling of Artemis’s humus, babba ghanoush, and falafel. The baba ghanoush had just the right amount of smokiness that should come through from the roasted eggplant while the humus, tinged with roasted peppers, was a delight on top of their soft, warm pita bread. The falafel had great flavor captured inside it’s texture of crispy outside with a warm and soft inside. I then moved on to the beef and lamb gyro, the staple of any good Greek themed restaurant. I was not disappointed. Moist, flavorful meat was perfectly accented by the house made tzaziki sauce, accompanied by tomato and onion, and wrapped in their excellent pita bread. Sara enjoyed a chopped salad complete with roasted red peppers, fresh white corn, red onions and finished off with the most enticing fresh mint vinaigrette. Great Salad!

Artemis had a welcoming, friendly staff. As we spoke to one of the owners, she informed us that she is newly transplanted from St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands with her boyfriend, with whom she opened the restaurant. They did a fantastic job of renovating the location using complementary lighting, inviting colors and hard wood flooring to make the place comfortable and relaxing. After being only open for 2 weeks, they are beginning to find their groove and Artemis is beginning to have a life of it’s own.

Thankfully someone has opened a new restaurant in South Lake Tahoe that offers fresh, flavorful and diverse cuisine. Send me an email if you would like to know more, or when you need someone to go dine with. Being just around the corner from our house, my girlfriend and I plan on making Artemis a regular stop. With affordable pricing, plenty of vegetarian options, with fast, friendly service and an outside deck soon to open, Artemis Mediterranean Grill in South Lake Tahoe is sure to be a hit.

Signs of Spring in South Lake Tahoe

Here in Lake Tahoe, the weather is starting to turn from Winter to Spring and showing signs of days to come. Of course as I say that there is a mighty Pacific storm barreling down on us with hurricane force winds, rain, sleet and snow. The trees are bending this way and that to such alarming angles that you often wonder how they can stay anchored much less intact. But behind that all, underneath last years leaves, the silent awakening of Spring is upon us. Flowers are bursting up from the slowly thawing ground. Grass is sprouting, beckoning to be fertilized, thatched and mowed. The motorcycle calls from the garage waiting to be turned over and roared to life over mountain passes, while the fly rods quiver in their cases waiting for the first deep bend of a temporarily fooled, but ultimately wary trout. The ski resorts have stopped turning their lifts and watch as their white gold begins its journey to fill Lake Tahoe. Meanwhile the locals take solace in another Winter season coming to an end and begin planning the days of Summer ahead. As we sit in this period of limbo, with 65 degree days followed immediately by 35 degree ones and back to 70, we catalog the events that shaped another year of skiing, working and living and look forward to the next round of our lives. The busy Summer season will be here all too quickly. Running from baseball games to meetings, to bbq’s with friends, Summer is a roller coaster that always puts a smile on your face, your stomach occasionally in your throat, and always goes way too fast. And as I again look out my window at the last vestiges of winter, I will remind you that now is the best time to plan your summer portrait sessions when you are visiting the Lake. Because as last season showed, and Spring is proving once again, time moves on, seasons progress, and if you don’t stop and take the time to mark them now, they will be gone before you know it. -R

Fall Fashion Shoot

A little while back I convinced my live in SuperModel to go out and do a pseudo fashion shoot while we still had fall colors. The night was cool and we lost natural light fast, but I think we made out ok. Sara is always a super trooper and gave me some great shots for this series.

Sara’s Birthday

So, a few weeks back I found this really neat photo at a garage sale. It’s of this old woman in a classic pose from days gone by. It is definitely an antique. The glass is convex, the photo is convex. Really, really neat. Sara and I have it hanging in our bedroom. I have no idea who the woman is, nor how old the photo is, but I can tell you that most of it is hand painted. Everything except for her face has had a brush to it. So I got the idea of trying to duplicate the shot. ( I always love to try it!) On Sara’s birthday, while we were getting ready to head to dinner, I set up some lights in the bedroom and tried to reenact the shot. Here are the two pics… I did not however take the framed pic apart just because it is very delicate.

New Logo/Website

Hi everybody. It has been a while since I posted! Geez, where does the time go? Well, I am planning on doing a lot more. I have a bunch of pics to post and share and I can’t wait to get them up. But in the meantime, if you have gotten to this post, then I am sure you have seen the new website! Thanks Bryn! (side note, if you ever need your website redone, and you want a straight answer from a guy who knows websites, contact Bryn) In addition to the new website, I finally settled on a logo, and here it is.

It took a while to get down to something clean and easy and I would like to thank everybody for their feedback on the mock ups… Well, fall is here in Tahoe, the leaves have finally changed and are dropping off the trees, snow is in the air and that means SKI SEASON is close at hand. I can’t wait to hit the hills around here. Till next time, keep your crops tight and your focus sharp. -R

Hi Everyone, My good friend Dana Benedict over at Lake Tahoe Getaways wrote a post for me about my new business on his site! He talks about my wedding photography, family portrait photography and all the other stuff I shoot around beautiful Lake Tahoe. He’s been a real pal to me and adviser. And with the success of his business… believe me, I have been keeping my ears open for every tid bit he’s got.
